The Wretch Flannel

Mary Shelley never gave Frankenstein’s creation a name. Victor had plenty for him. Creature. Fiend. Demon. And from the moment he opened his eyes, a wretch.

This year, we went straight for one of the original monsters. The creature who helped start it all. Then we dragged him into the Hales world.

Instead of the bright neon green that became the modern shorthand for Frankenstein’s monster, we went back to the colorized posters for Universal’s 1931 Frankenstein. The creature’s skin was pale, muted and sickly, like rotting flesh that had been pulled from the grave. So we grabbed our greens directly from those posters and worked them into a dark mix of black and charcoal.

From across the room, The Wretch is one badass green flannel. Get closer and the monster starts crawling out.

The custom woven label reveals The Wretch we’ve imagined for years: dragged from the laboratory and stalking the boulevard for the race that will settle once and for all who owns the night.

Beneath his slicked-back black hair, heavy metal clamps bite across the top of his skull, pinning it back in place. Thick staples pierce the dead flesh around his neck, holding his head to the body below, while bolts protrude from either side, still scorched by the electrical charge that tore him from the grave. Scars carve across his face, dead eyes glare from beneath a battered brow and a white tank exposes Mary Shelley inked across the chest of the nameless creature she first brought to life in her original 1818 novel.

The worst of Dr. Frankenstein’s wretched monster is hidden inside the back yoke, but a few details broke free and made their way to the outside. Pearl black snaps run throughout the flannel, while green lightning bolts charge each wrist, transforming them into a pair of high-end cufflinks built for monster mayhem. We even swapped our normal HALES pocket label font for dripping green lettering, giving the outside one more little wretched touch.
